MONDAY:

8:30-8:40         Introduction and welcome (Juliane Johnson)
8:40-9:00         Review of curriculum and manual (Diana Schunn)
9:00-12:00 pm  Introduction and historical perspective of SANE/SART program,                        sexual assault statistics, role of sexual assault response
                       team members, review of SART process, role and responsibility
                       of the nurse examiner, use of the colposcope in evidence
                       collection, personal belief evaluation (Diana Schunn)
12:00-1:00 LUNCH     (on your own)
1:00-5:00          Male and female anatomy overview, identification of myths
                        surrounding genital anatomy and injury, acute physical exam of
                        adult sexual assault patient, injury identification/documentation,
                        importance and interpretation of photos and documentation (Diana                         Schunn)

TUESDAY:
8:00-8:30 am    Registration and Continental Breakfast
8:30-12:00 pm  Sex offending behavior, thinking errors, victim selection, paraphilias
                       (Special Agent Michael Prodan, South Carolina Law Enforcement
                       Division, Consultant to SANE/SART Programs)
12:00-1:00 LUNCH     (on your own)

Breakout Session for Nurses and Other Medical Professionals:

1:00-5:00 pm    Medical protocol and forensic evidence collection, injury
                       identification/documentation, guidelines for taking pictures, review of                        colposcopic findings, trauma identification, mechanism of injury
                       and interpretation of findings, nursing practice, specific
                       case review (Diana Schunn)

OR

Breakout Session for Law Enforcement and Other Professionals (Advocates, Social Workers, etc):

1:00-5:00        Offender typologies, investigative techniques, detailed profiling,
                     specifics on working with sex offenders in the law enforcement
                     setting, and victim interview/history (SA Michael Prodan)

WEDNESDAY:
8:00-8:30 am     Registration and Continental Breakfast
8:30-11:00         Forensic evidence collection, packaging, documentation,
                        use of protocol for evidence collection, forensic value of
                        DNA testing (Biologist with KS Bureau of Investigations)

11:00-12:00       Role of the advocate, myths and facts surrounding sexual assault,
                        participating as a part of the sexual assault response team, rape
                        trauma syndrome, crisis intervention (Diane Delzer, Wichita Area
                        Sexual Assault Center)
12:00-1:00         LUNCH (on your own)
1:00-2:00          Role of the advocate continued
2:00-4:00          Role of law enforcement in child and adult cases, organization of a                         law enforcement agency, chain of custody, overview of investigative                         techniques used in sex crime cases, development and use of
                        joint procedures (Detective with Wichita PD-Sex Crimes Unit and                         Detective from Wichita Exploited and Missing Child Unit)
4:00-5:00          Medical case review (for medical professionals...optional for others)

THURSDAY:

8:30-11:00         Overview of the judicial system, role of the prosecutor, Kansas                          statutes and mandatory reporting, courtroom testimony,
                         preparing to testify, meeting with the prosecutor , role
                         of the expert witness (Asst. District Attorney from Sedgwick                          County)
11:00-12:00 pm     Role of the defense (Defense Attorney)
12:00-1:00            LUNCH (on your own)
1:00-5:00              Communication techniques, courtroom testimony, skills                            demonstration, and mock court (Diana Schunn)

FRIDAY:

8:30-11:00         Acute pediatric medical-legal exam, Tanner stages, communication                         techniques, review and interpretation of colposcopic findings, STD

1:00-1:45           Sexual Assault Forensic Evidence Collection Kit (Diana Schunn)

2:15-3:15           Emerging issues: underserved communities, male victims, drug
                         facilitated sexual assault , ethnicity, mental illness, elderly victims,
                         disabilities, sexual orientation
3:15-3:45          Taking it back to your community (Juliane Johnson)
3:45-4:15          Vicarious trauma and self-care (Juliane Johnson)
4:15-4:30          Review of final exam and course wrap-up
